Tuckpointing & Repairs
What is tuckpointing?
Tuckpointing is the process of removing deteriorated mortar from between bricks and replacing it with fresh mortar. This restores the structural integrity of the wall, prevents water infiltration, and dramatically improves appearance. It's one of the most cost-effective ways to extend the life of your masonry.
How do I know if I need tuckpointing?
Signs you need tuckpointing include: mortar that's crumbling or falling out, visible gaps between bricks, white staining (efflorescence) on walls, water leaking through brick walls, or mortar that's recessed more than 1/4 inch from the brick face. If your mortar is over 25-30 years old, it's worth having it inspected.
How long does tuckpointing last?
Quality tuckpointing typically lasts 25-30 years, depending on weather exposure, mortar quality, and the condition of the surrounding brick. South and west-facing walls may need attention sooner due to increased sun and weather exposure.
Can you match my existing mortar color?
Yes, we carefully match mortar colors and textures to blend seamlessly with your existing masonry. We can match virtually any mortar color, from traditional gray to custom-tinted mortars.
Chimney Work
How often should I have my chimney inspected?
We recommend annual chimney inspections, especially before heating season. Chimneys are exposed to extreme weather and temperature changes, making them susceptible to damage that can worsen quickly if not addressed.
What are signs my chimney needs repair?
Warning signs include: crumbling or missing mortar, cracked or spalling bricks, white staining, damaged or missing chimney cap, leaning chimney, water stains on ceiling near chimney, or visible gaps in the flashing. Any of these warrant a professional inspection.
Do you rebuild chimneys?
Yes, we handle everything from minor chimney repairs to complete rebuilds. Depending on the damage, we may recommend a partial rebuild (above the roofline) or a full rebuild. We'll assess your chimney and recommend the most cost-effective solution.
What is a chimney crown and why is it important?
The chimney crown is the concrete or mortar cap at the top of your chimney. It sheds water away from the flue and protects the chimney structure. Cracked or deteriorated crowns allow water infiltration, which causes significant damage over time. We repair and replace chimney crowns as part of our chimney services.

Project timelines vary by scope. Small repairs may take a day or two, while larger projects like chimney rebuilds or extensive tuckpointing may take a week or more. Weather can also impact scheduling. We'll provide a timeline estimate with your quote.
Do you require a deposit?
For most projects, we require a deposit to secure your spot on our schedule and cover material costs. The specific terms depend on project size and are discussed during the estimate process.
Materials & Process
What type of mortar do you use?
We use high-quality mortars appropriate for each specific application. The mortar type depends on the existing mortar, brick type, and structural requirements. Using the wrong mortar can actually damage historic or softer bricks, so proper mortar selection is critical.
Can masonry work be done in winter?
Masonry work requires temperatures above freezing for proper mortar curing. In Northeast Ohio, our primary season runs spring through fall. However, we can sometimes work during mild winter periods. Contact us to discuss timing for your project.
Do you clean up after the job?
Absolutely. We take pride in leaving your property clean and tidy. We protect surrounding areas during work and thoroughly clean up debris, mortar droppings, and equipment when the job is complete.
What's the difference between repair and replacement?
Repair involves fixing damaged areas while preserving the existing structure—like tuckpointing or replacing individual bricks. Replacement means removing and rebuilding a section entirely. We always recommend the most cost-effective approach that will properly solve the problem.
